Sand Hill Road is best known for its many venture capital offices. But the road is also home to a luxury resort—The Rosewood. VCs and entrepreneurs are often seen meeting at the resort’s bar and restaurant, the Madera.
Usually Madera’s atmosphere is relaxed and professional. But not Thursday evenings. That’s when the bar’s legendary happy-hour scene attracts a large crowd, infamous for the abundance of “cougars.” A high-end escort service is rumored to operate out of the bar.
Overheard:
“Last time I was here on a first date. It was the day Facebook announced its IPO. We saw Mark Zuckerberg and his girlfriend across the terrace and decided to send over a bottle of champagne. They received it, looked around a bit, drank it, and left without saying anything.”
“I came here one Thursday night and met an older woman. Within 10 minutes of introducing ourselves I had convinced her to hop the fence with me to the hotel pool and go skinny dipping. That must be some kind of record.”
Says the waitress:
“I’m not serving anyone famous tonight, but those ladies behind you are working girls.”
